Download: 1991 WGCI Rap Down Mix

In the early 90s, “Rap Down” was Chicago’s first Hip-Hop Radio show, airing on WGCI every Saturday night between 10:00PM & 2:00AM on WGCI.

The show was hosted by Ramonski Luv and “Disco” Dave Hawkins (RIP). Among the Hip-Hop acts of the time getting national airplay, “Rap Down” also gave a vehicle to some of Chicago’s burgeoning talent, including a rapper who had just broke into the Guinness Book of World Records for being the world’s fastest rapper.

Starting at midnight, the show featured commercial-free mixes which usually lasted about an hour.
Converted from a heavily played cassette, here’s a 15-minute snippet of one of them.

This was awesome. For 20 years these mini mixes haunted my memories. I would torture myself thinkin I would never hear one ever again. I grew up in chicago, (north ave + ashland) and I would wait all week for saturday nite for the rap down. You did a solid by puttn this on, ima tell all my friends and my bro bout this. Good look
P.s. When and/or where can I find more? I had this one recorded on tape from my old boom box, with a song ive never known, artist unknown, song name unknown. And I am self proclaimed theologan of “golden age” hip hop
